The arrest over the past week of four foreign nationals and impoundment of about 20 kilogrammes of a narcotic substance suspected to be heroin is a big boost to the war on drugs, whose tempo has been stepped up in recent years.
However, the fact that all four suspects are foreigners shows that international drug trafficking rings still regard Tanzania as a relatively safe conduit for drugs.
It is worth noting that over a dozen foreigners have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking in Dar es Salaam and other parts of the country in the last five years or so, but some daring individuals still reckon they can take their chances.
The only way to deter them is to increase surveillance and vigilance at the country’s entry and exit points to prevent drugs from being brought in and ensure that culprits are brought to justice.
The Anti-Drug Unit of the Police Force deserves a pat on the back for its meticulous execution of a sting operating which netted the four suspects. However, much more still needs to be done to rid Tanzania of the drug menace.
