Dar es Salaam. Untapped talent will be on display for nearly eight months during this year’s Junior NBA League, which starts on March 17 at JMK Youth Park.

The championship, which is a school-based basketball programme for boys and girls aged between 10 and 14 years, will feature teams from 30 schools across the country.

The schools will compete in Eastern and Western Conferences, with each school representing one of the 30 NBA teams in the United States, and receiving corresponding NBA team-branded T-shirts for their games.

Junior NBA Programme manager, Bahati Mgunda said yesterday that top eight teams from each conference will qualify for the playoffs.

The two conference winners will go on to face each other in the final in November.

NBA officials from the US will also conduct basketball clinics, coaching sessions, life skills seminars and after-school programming at the multi-sports facility.

Jr. NBA is the league’s global youth basketball participation programme for boys and girls.

Under the programme, youngsters learn the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game at the grassroots level in efforts to promote the sport in Africa.

“Our objective is to groom talented youngsters so that they hit the limelight and excel internationally,” said Mgunda.

JMK Youth Park, a multi-sport facility, is open seven days a week.

The facility boasts professionally licensed coaches who are dedicated to providing sports and healthy lifestyle education opportunities to the youth and the community.

Through skills based coaching and athletic programs modeled after those in the United States and Europe, JMK Park aims to raise the standard, performance and profile of Tanzanian sports.

The Jr. NBA League reigning champions Agha Khan Secondary School will be seeking to retain their title when this year’s championship roars into life.
