Dar es Salaam. Two drivers share the National Rally Championship (NRC) lead after the Mkwawa Rally, the third round of the national race.

Gurjit Singh and Ahmed Huwel, members of Hari Singh and Mkwawa rally clubs respectively, put up a spectacular show that thrilled fans in Iringa over the weekend.

The two drivers have amassed 43 points each as they shape up for the fourth round, according to the latest NRC table released yesterday.

The Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT) chief executive officer, Yusuf Ghor, expressed optimism that the next stage would be more competitive and exciting than last weekend’s round.

On Sunday, Huwel, racing in a Ford Fiesta Proto, pushed the car to the limit to win the Mkwawa Rally.

He won the Mkwawa Rally claimed top honour after collecting 25 points. Singh, who won the Kilimanjaro Rally, the second round of the NRC, a few weeks ago, finished second in Iringa with 18 points.

The two drivers’ impressive show in Iringa came as a relief to their fans who were left puzzled when the duo failed to shine in the first round in Tanga early this year.

The Tanga Rally, the opening round of the 2018 NRC Rally season, saw Dharam Pandya of Pandya Rally team winning finishing top with 25 points.

Surprisingly, Pandya, one the best drivers in the country, did not sparkle last weekend in Iringa. He is now placed third with 40 points.

Also in the top four is Tufail Racing team driver Tufail Tifail, who is fourth with 31 points, while Rajpal Dhani, also from Hari Singh Rally team, is fifth after amassing 26 points.

Ali Abbas Rally team driver Shane Fazal is placed sixth with 25 points, while Alisasger Fazal, Hassan Ramzan and Nadeem Daud are seventh, eighth and ninth with 22, 16 and 12 points respectively.

Also in the top 10 is Ajminder Dhani from Hari Singh rally team, who has 12 points.

Arusha’s elite driver Gerald Miller opted to skip the Mkwawa Rally.

The other drivers competing in the rally with positions and points in bracket are, Altaf Munge (11th, six), Anthony John (12th, four), Mandeep Dhani (12th, four) and Amer Balhabou (14th, two).
