Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Prisons launched their Nyerere International volleyball tournament with a convincing win over Rwanda’s APR yesterday.

They beat the army team by three straight sets in the thrilling Group A match at the National Indoor Stadium.

The tournament, which has brought together teams from six countries, has organised by Tanzania Amateur Volleyball in honour of the Father of the nation, Julius Nyerere.

The teams have been pooled into three Groups. Group A comprises Tanzania Prisons, APR, Mjimwema, Nyuki, Chui and Makongo.

Jeshi Stars, Police, JKT and Kigoma are in Group B while Group C consists of five teams, including Pentagon.

Tanzania Prisons looked a clear favourite to win the match after securing a 25-20 win in the first set.

Evelyne Moshi and Hellen Richard were instrumental in the hosts’ win as they led their team’s onslaught against the visitors.

Together with Martha Boniface, the three scored 6, 5 and 4 points respectively in the opening set.

Tanzania Prisons completely dwarfed their opponents in the second set which easily won with 25-10 score.
