Dar es Salaam. Athletics Tanzania (AT) has selected 13 runners for the World Youth Championships to be held in Nairobi, Kenya in July.
The national athletics team head coach, Robert Kaliyahe, said yesterday that the runners were selected after the just concluded East and Central Africa Athletics Championships.
Tanzania Mainland finished second in the regional championships which came to a close on Sunday at the National Stadium. Kaliyahe said the youngsters making up the team are those who impressed the national athletics governing body’s technical committee during the two-day championships.
“As of now, AT is striving to raise funds for the national youth team’s residential camp,” he said.
The coach said the runners were selected on merit, but he fell short of naming them, saying the AT would make their names public later this month. “Our national team comprises young but talented runners who won medals in this year’s East and Central Africa Championships. They have all it takes to shine in Nairobi,” he said.
“Be patient, I will name them later this week or next week after consulting AT officials,” the coach said after being pressed to reveal their names.
Kaliyahe said he was optimistic the runners would undergo adequate preparations ahead of the world championships, which will bring together the crème of young athletes from various countries around the globe.
He said they would like to Tanzania restores its dented pride in athletics by winning medals in Nairobi.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Council (NSC) has hailed AT for staging what it described as competitive and exciting regional youth championships at the National Stadium last week.
The NSC secretary general, Mohamed Kiganja, said yesterday that the council was happy with the way local athletes fared at the regional event.
