Mr Cannon expresses delight to hear directly from the MCL’s editorial staff, especially “the way it has strengthened its investigative journalism”

Dar es Salaam. Ireland’s Minister for the Diaspora and Overseas Development, Ciaran Cannon T.D has reminded the government of Tanzania on the effective and crucial role that the media plays in ensuring accountability and transparency, thus promoting democratic values through encouraging vibrant public debate.

Mr Cannon made the remark when he paid a visit to the offices of Mwananchi Communications Limited, whereby he interacted directly with journalists and the management of the leading newspaper company in the country.

“A strong, independent and vibrant media is not just a source of economic activity,” cautioned the minister.

“However, in Ireland’s experience, it has an essential role in supporting national development,” the minister noted.

Mr Cannon, who is on a four-day visit to Tanzania, said he was delighted to hear directly from the company’s editorial staff and, in particular, “the way the company has strengthened its investigative journalism.”

The company’s journalists are among several members of the profession who have benefited from the Irish government in terms of training and support through its partner the Tanzania Media Foundation.

In his four-day visit, the minister will have an opportunity to meet with Ireland’s partners in the government of Tanzania, representatives of the private sector, civil society and the media.
